The trail currently ends at the Carbonado Cemetery. A monument honors those killed in mine explosions from 1899 to 1930. Many are also honored on headstones in the cemetery.
The unpaved trail extends 3 miles north to the next trailhead at Wilkeson. Construction of this section is scheduled for 2006. The City of Carbonado is opposed to extending the trail within it's city limits. The trailhead location, and the detour around Carbonado to extend the trail to the Carbon River and Mount Rainier, is currently uncertain. |
