The Foothills Rails to Trails Coalition is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. Our mission is to assist Pierce County communities in the creation, maintenance and usage of a connected system of non-motorized trails for healthier people from Mt. Rainier to Puget Sound.

Activity:

Provide information and assistance to users of the Foothills Trail while walking, cycling, rollerblading, running, or riding horseback on the trail.

***FOOTHILLS PATROL TRAINING Join the certification training for the Foothills Rails-to-Trails Coalition's Courtesy Patrol. Keith Lassen with Pierce Transit and a Courtesy Patrolman will present an overview of current first-aid practices at 9 AM, Mar. 14, at High Cedars Golf Club, 149th St. Court E., Orting. The Courtesy Patrol was created in 2002 to encourge trail courtesy and provide trail information to users. Members also assist with special events such as the Foothills Dash, Daffodil Classic bike ride, the Rainier to Ruston Relay and Ultra, and the South Prairie Salmon Run. The Patrol numbers about 100 members.

Activity: The mission of the quarterly Trail Line News is to communicate important policies, trends, and events relevant to members of the Foothills Rails-to-Trails Coalition. The duties of the editor include soliciting articles from the membership and editing draft content for clarity, spelling, punctuation, and syntax, then working with the layout designer to finalize and check the newsletter.

Activity: Attend work parties with other volunteers to open, improve, repair, and maintain the Foothills and other local non-motorized trails.

Rainier to Ruston Relay and Ultra Volunteers

The R2R is our major annual fundraiser and celebration of National Trails Day (1st Saturday of June). Find out more at www.rainiertoruston.com.

Activity: Advertising and PR Volunteer to work with Task Leader to (any or all)

  • Liaison with the PLU Media Lab to develop an advertising program and design brochures, posters, and flyers, and check them for accuracy.
  • Submit materials and press releases for TV, radio, newspapers, magazines, and walking, running and hiking club newsletters.
  • Recruit and coordinate volunteers in communities along the course to create National Trails Day events which complement the R2R.

Activity: Bell Stand Crews Task Leader (or Volunteer) to manage (or be on one of) the crews that set up and take down bell stands and signage.

Activity: Documentation Volunteer to work with Task Leader to take pictures and/or video of the event. We are also looking for someone to take pictures and GPS data at sites of interest all along the course to put them on our website as soon as possible.

Activity: Exchange Monitors Task Leader (or Volunteer) to manage (or be on one of) the crews that monitor the bell stands at each exchange.

Activity: Finish Area Task Leader to organize finish area vendor and sponsor tent placements and arrange for music.

Activity: First Aid Station Task Leader to organize emergency 1st aid stations and radio communication along the course.

Activity: Sponsors Volunteer to work with the Race Director to solicit sponsors.

Activity: T-Shirts Task Leader to provide event T-shirts for all participants and volunteers.

Activity: Traffic, Parking, and Course Monitors Task Leader to organize volunteers to direct traffic and parking at exchanges, post monitors on the course where runners and walkers may need direction, and sweep the course.

Activity: Volunteers to work with the approximately 75 other volunteers and Task Leaders who make this event so much fun. Let us know what you're interested in, and we will find a place for you.
